History and civilization
Traces of occupation in the valley date back to the 11th century, but some names of places suggest Burgundes used to inhabit the highest areas around in the 6th century.
- Morzine’s name has Celtic origins, meaning border / limit, as the village is situated on the border of the Valais canton in Switzerland and on the highest point of Chablais Savoyard.
- The Old Bridge was built in the 18th century, more precisely in 1725, and reconstructed in 1928.
- Until present, Morzine-Avoriaz has hosted the Tour of France 14 times. It was also one of the stages for the Paragliding World Cup on many occasions.
- The Ski Club in Morzine was created in 1910.
